Derren Brown: The System

Hi everyone.

Who saw Derren Brown's "The System" on Channel 4 (UK) last night?

WARNING: Though this post only contains a 'partial' SPOILER, do not read ahead if you haven't seen the show and want to experience it 'unspoiled'.

(I don't directly reveal what the 'system' was in this post, my presuppositions might give it away. And other posters might reveal it anyway.)

For those who didn't see it, the premise of the show was that Derren had worked out a system for always betting right at the horse races. A guaranteed money maker. The show follows the fortunes of a 'random' member of the public who has a succession of wins under Derren's system. On the way, he convinces bookies, journalists and skeptics alike. Not to mention the woman who wins loads of money.

While the show wasn't about NLP per se, like all Derren's shows, it's about subjective experience. And that kinda makes it 'NLP interesting'. I thought it quite an elaborate, 'showy' demonstration of how beliefs get built. Of course, you might or might not appreciate his direct invitation to 'chunk side' and apply 'the system' to beliefs in alternative therapy. I guess he always likes to get that particular dig in.

Other comments?

Cheers
