| NEWS: Smelling by Quantum Vibration? This articlein Scientific American points out some new research that raises the likelihood of all that quantum jiggery-pokery from physics winding its way into neurology...
In this particular case, neurologists used to believe that the shape of a chemical molecule determines how it locks in to the receptors in our body and therefore tells us what that molecule smells like. The problem is, some molecules are shaped identically but have wildly different smells.
So, a little over a decade ago, Luca Turin, a biophysicist and perfumer, thought that the difference in smells might actually be determined by the different quantum vibrational frequency of the identically shaped molecules. The theory goes that even though the shapes are the same, the vibration is picked up which allows us to tell the difference between the smell of vodka and rotten eggs, for example.
Many neurologists and physicists derided the findings, saying that the mechanism which would allow a receptor to notice something like a quantum resonance had never been proved possible.
Now, it appears that there is a feasible mechanism. This does not mean that Turin's theory has been proven, it just means that it is plausible and needs to be investigated further.
Many of the more interesting things that people can do with their brains have been linked with quantum a cavity, however many biophysicists have said that the biological machinery of the human body works on too large a scale to allow quantum mechanics to be a factor.
The ADP/ATP reaction within human muscles have already turned out to be most likely influenced by the quantum mechanics of the situation according to much recent research. If the same thing turns out to be true, it could explain and provide a mechanism for many unexplainable aspects of human consciousness.
In the meanwhile, the controversy will no doubt continue!
Be Well,
Michael Perez
