I realise I've strayed slightly from the original point, so let me offer my top five favourite books. Or at least five of my favourite books that I'll call my top five for this thread - 'cause hey, why not?

These are in no particular order:

The Last Hero - Terry Pratchett

    Witches Abroad - Terry Pratchett

Lords and Ladies - Terry Pratchett

    Maskerade - Terry Pratchett

    Carpe Jugulum - Terry Pratchett

... there may be some crossover between this list and the previous one ...

    Cheers,

    James

    Hi All,

My first instinct was not to participate in this thread because I can't figure out any way in hell to establish a pecking order for books. It's like asking me whether I love my mom more than my dad, or to compare really good foie gras to an exquisitely well-prepared cheeseburger.

Therefore, I will resort to that last refuge of preference cowards everywhere, five NLP books (whether they were written to be that or not) that I think are quite good, picked at random, stream of consciousness style.

Frogs Into Princes - Bandler and Grinder

    Dune - Frank Herbert

Six Blind Elephants - Steve Andreas

Watchmen - Alan Moore + Dave Gibbons

Second Stage Lensman - E.E. 'Doc' Smith

The Tipping Point - Malcom Gladwell

Stranger in a Strange Land - Robert Heinlein

That's as close to five as I'm coming for the moment...

    Be Well,

    Michael Perez

    1. The Pastel City - M. John Harrison

    2. The Monk Who Sold His Ferrari - Robin S. Sharma

    3. Change your life in 7 days - Paul Mckenna

    4. Blink - Malcolm Gladwell

    5. The NLP Coach - Ian Mcdermott & Wendy Jago

I am still buzzing after reading 'A Whole New Mind' by Daniel Pink..but a bit soon to add to my favourites.

If you read 'The Pastel City' you may just see where George Lucas got the idea from...i did.

    Re: Top Five Books

The Sourcebook of Magic.(A comprehensive guide to NLP change patterns)
    L Michael Hall Second Edition
Very useful resource, contains lots of patterns that I hadn't come across. The "spinning icons" pattern was neat and the "Meta-programs change pattern" had an amazing effect on me.

The Complete Patents of Nikola Tesla. Edited by Jim Glenn
Not an NLP book but a constant reminder to me of how cavernous the human brain can be. Without this man our lives would be dramatically different. I just flick through the book to free up my self imposed limitations.

    Island Aldious Huxley
Read this first as a teenager but it was many years before a lot of the ideas clicked and came into focus. I particularrly liked the idea of the birds on the island being taught to say "Here and Now" to remind people to focus.

Persuasion Engineering Richard Bandler and John La Vale
This totally changed the way I feel about selling. I used to push a product, now I explain how I can solve your problem and you ask me to do it for you.
You have to read this at least twice.

The full facts of cold reading Ian Rowland
Initially got this book when trying to find out more about how Derren Brown works. Derren recomended this book. I found that understanding the "psychological manipulation technique" used for psychic readings gives me a good grounding for separating the wheat from the chaff in NLP and also in a lot of "New Age" techniques. People may be able to read my mind but it seems more likely that they are using cold reading techniques.
