Advice on Developing a 1 Hour Session for Secondary and Primary Schools

Hi There
First of all I am new to these forums so fingers crossed I am doing this right.
I work for a primary care trust supervising and training school nurses and health visitors and doing some direct client work with young people and families.
I have been asked to develop a package that nurses can deliver in schools to boost self esteem and generally help young people to feel more positive. This will in turn have an effect on obesity, sexual health and other health related issues
It is a great opportunity and responsibility. I really want to get this right as I know the influence this 1 hour session can have on young minds.
I have completed a masters and use NLP in my practice every day so have some ideas but would be grateful for any of your suggestions to enable me to help others make a difference to many young people both at primary and secondary school.
Thank you
Deborah

Deborah,

Hi, first thing I'd mention is for you to contact the schools where you will be working. All schools are required to deliver the ECM (Every Child Matters) framwork to students and what you mention in you initial mail links directly into that. It would be worth checking to see what elements of the ECM curriculum that the schools would benefit from your expertise knowledge and ability to deliver. There is no point in reinventing the wheel but there is always scope to take the wheel to the next level!

It would also be useful to know if you will be delivering to assemblies, year groups, class groups or small groups of handpicked students. What you can do with 300+ students in an assembly differs greatly from working with a small cohort of SEN students. The same questions arise from which age group you are to be working with, the requirements for a 7 year old to a 15 year old with low self esteem is vast, I am not sure a '1 size fits all' plan will work that well due to the differing needs.

I Love the 'BrainBox', in a spontanious effort to help a child with anger issue I once tried something similar using fuzzyfelts!

It sounds like you have a great project on your hands, there is certainly a need for more workshops that embrace these ideas and are delivered by industry experts.

Thanks

Matt

Hi Matt
Thank you for getting back to me.
I will need to develop two adaptable sessions for key stages 2 and 3. For Key stage 1, I shall use a Bright Stars programme that I have already partly developed that uses the relax kids stuff, and you are right it has to be age appropriate. I will be teaching the nurses and providing them with the packs to go and deliver the sessions as there is only one of me and 526 schools
It will be part of PHSE so delivered to whole classes. School nurses already deliver PHSE lessons on sexual health and healthy eating.
I will remember the 5 outcomes from ECM .
It is a great opportunity and if I get it right it could be replicated nationally!
Deborah
