Re: NLP Resources for Elementary Education

What I would like to know is who is going to get the ball rolling with NLP in the classroom across the pond...it sure would be nice to have a formal organization to associate with! I know there are folks here and there that do their own thing...

Oh, and Matt, for the most part, ADHD does NOT work in music class! I keep them far too active for it to be an issue, for the most part. From time to time I get the following from the classroom teachers: "well I know that you don't have any problems with [problem student's name], because it's so fun, and they get to play games, move around, and do lots of different things...."

So, why aren't the classroom teachers using the same strategies? Hmm?

After all, shouldn't everyone have as much fun as the wacky music teacher? I think so!

Ahead of me in "getting the ball rolling," or "wondering who is going to get the ball rolling?"

    Ah...language ambiguity...gotta love it!

Yes, I can see I left you far too many openings there, Phil. What I probably should have said was: Kate Benson is International Director of Education for The Society of NLP. This might interest you: META NLP Education - NLP for teachers, training NLP techniques improving learning, teaching, behaviour.

Keep up the magic, Phil. You're the teacher I wish I'd had more of.

Allow me to throw a little hissy fit...

...I WANT SOMETHING ON THIS SIDE OF THE POND! WAAHHHH...

    Ok, done with that now!

As far as being the teacher you wish you'd had more of...I'm afraid I'm not doing a very good job today of being in the childrens' world...I'm having all sorts of trouble relating to them. So, I better make a big shift over lunch if I want my afternoon to go better!

    Matt,

And what exactly do you mean by that? I am hardly qualified to organize NLP training events for teachers in the US! However, I will be the FIRST ONE IN LINE to buy a ticket for an NLP Practitioner's Training in the U.S. that is geared towards teachers! And, I will encourage all of my colleagues to do the same.

Oh, and if we could receive college credit for it that can apply towards continuing education, that would certainly attract a WHOLE LOT of people!

Just throwing out some ideas here...and to my knowledge, nobody is doing such a thing in the US yet!

Re: NLP Resources for Elementary Education

So, maybe Kate would be willing to start networking with some universities in the U.S. to build a program that we can get college credit for, and a practitioner's certificate!

I think a summer institute would be the best option for us teachers who are tied up during the school year. And while we're at it, maybe we could put it in a place that would be fun to visit in the summer--not too hot, and moderately priced...(since I'm dreaming big at the moment).

What a great way this could be to spread NLP in the U.S.!!!

    That's interesting.

Phil, is Paul McKenna hit your TV screens yet over there with his obesity / weight loss program? I Maybe that will raise the profile a little?

    Matt,

Yes he has, but I've never watched the program (I am nearly six foot, and only a little over eleven stone). Does he actually call it NLP?

Re: NLP Resources for Elementary Education

Never underestimate the power of the simple submodality shift to completely transform the learning environment...

I just finished a lesson with some nine year-olds, in which we had all reached a collective moment of frustration which had been boiling slowly over a lack of skills involving a concept that I was sure I had sufficiently broken down for the student. What do you do in a situation like that? Well, you look at two boys who have recognized the absurdity of the moment, beat me to the punch, and started grinning at each other. Funny, the minute I addressed that they were smiling, they started laughing uncontrollably. Then, before I knew it, the whole class was smiling and laughing for no particular reason--except to release the tension that had accumulated for about twenty minutes.

I did not fight it. In fact, I just sort of let it go for a few minutes, and then once it had sort of run its course, I turned the moment into a science/NLP lesson about physiology, endorphines, and how just making yourself smile sometimes can change how you are feeling.

We all felt better, and then finished the lesson.

    Phil

Very nice Phil now just double those good feelings and then double them again, that's right you know exactly how to feel very very good and you know that you that cannot not laugh because laughing is so contagious, and the more you try not to laught ...the funnier it becomes ...and as the corners of your mouth start to curl in that familiar way you smile..... you know how that goes do you not.... that's right ...the more you smile the more contagious it becomes... till you just find yourself smiling... more and more now ... very soon that smile becomes a chuckle ... you know those chuckles that become more than just a chuckle... those infectious chuckles that grow and grow... the ones that turn in to a laugh and as youre laughing ...you realise that laughting just because you can ....you feel good now ...phil , that is when the fun really begins... Isnt it ...nice to know that people notice you smiling ... the more you laugh .... the broader your smile ....the more people around you wonder ....just what is going on for Phil ... that makes him so happy ...pretty soon they to begin to begin smile ....smile and the world smiles with you... even as far as Australia people are smiling ...as they are typing to people in Ohio ...who are smiling as they read the typing. ...the people in offices are looking at people typing and reading in that particular way .... wondering why they are smiling ...feeling so so good about smiling ..because its nice to .... just feel good for the sake of feeling good. Now Mary in my office is wondering why i am feeling so merry and the more merry I feel the merrier mary becomes till very soon a broad smile appears on Mary's face... now more and more people are feeling happy . Now i wonder at just how broad a smile is on your face...right now ...you have such a wonderful oppertunity...an oppertunity to make so many wonderful children smile .... to feel better about themselves ...each and every day that you are a part of their lives, ...now ...that's a wonderful reason to smile ....knowing that you have given them a gift ....each and everyone one of them can leave your classroom feeling better ... so much better than when they walked in.

There are teachers and there are teachers that make a difference, from reading this posts, you my friend are a teacher that makes a difference. Keep up the great work.

Smile and be well as you have a great day

Re: NLP Resources for Elementary Education

Smiling this morning at school despite a sore throat and a "heavy" head... And it was so nice to see the kids "contracting" it, too, and smiling and behaving (at least most of the time...)

I'm realizing how few materials one needs in order to create a beautiful lesson. And all this thanks to you, Phil! Today I got them to ask each other in pairs "What's this?" and at the same time "draw" an animal in the air so the other one answers "It's an iguana" etc etc
At home when I was planning the activity I thought of using flashcards but then I remembered your magic, Phil, and decided to have them use just gestures. And... they just loved it!!! After about 8-10 minutes I had to interrupt them and end the activity because I was running out of time! To their disappointment, of course!
    Thank you!

Re: NLP Resources for Elementary Education

    Christine,

You are welcome. And YOU are making ME smile today!

I love creating wonderful lessons with very little "stuff," which is sometimes necessary, because most of my week I travel from room to room, teaching on a cart.

I feel a little lack-luster today, but things are going well, in spite of it! I just had one of those lessons with six and seven year-olds that had a lot of "wind 'em up and let 'em run" elements. Those are great for days when you feel like you have less steam than usual. After all, the kids learn so much more when THEY do all the work!

I'm just hoping that I can sing in 48 hours--when I have an important performance!

For now, my stage is the classroom...

    Keep smiling!

    Phil

Re: NLP Resources for Elementary Education

Oh, and one more thing I wanted to tell you Phil, is, I read somewhere on another post of yours that you've read the book 'The power of now' by Eckhart Tolle. I found this book incredible! So... full of wisdom! (Although applying all the things he says is another matter...!) I read it again and again because it's about issues I can absorb only very-very slowly...

So, on the way to enlightenment!
(They say that the journey is more worth it than the destination, don't they?)

    Christine,

The Power of Now is a book with a single message, and Eckhart repeats it over and over and over...at that time in my life, though, I rather needed that to happen, because when one is not paying attention to one's world, communication doesn't always work in the most efficient way...

    or does it...

Oh well! Anyway, yes, the message of that book is a very good one, and if more people in the world would begin to pay attention to what is happening right now, the world would be a very different place!

It is the beginning of understanding this very notion that "woke me up," so to speak.

Ok, back to nursing my cold! Getting better every minute!

    Phil
