Standards at FE and HE

"An external examiner's report observed that students "producing not just barely acceptable but sometimes unacceptable work are attaining passes at Honours level".

“As a new lecturer I was under huge pressure to pass the students. The college was financially driven. It was a pure bums-on-seats policy. It wasn’t about education at all.”

Yea, I wish I went to a different university!!! My grades were good but to borrow a line of marketing and save a million pounds on advertising at the same time - every little helps...

Re: Standards at FE and HE

Hi, Just wanted to add a little bit more...I am lucky enough to work at a FE college that has within its ranks some awesomely progressive minds.....alongside we travel with others who beliefs still buy into that money controls the show & focus on the number of £ signs generated rather than the quality of consciousness that is being...dare i even say taught?......Yet, we have to be in it to win it surely?

And....

If there is evidence that it is happening, then there are huge possibilities that it grows?

I wwork as a learner mentor, alongside my mail colleague, amongst others we see the value in assisting students to find what is right for them right now.....rather than them contnue with something just for the heck of it.....whats the purpose in doing something that fails to bring you joy when you could be doing something that you love?...Later you could love this, do you right now....so lets discover what makes you shine!

In my mind this what will create a youth full of hope, & inspiration & belief...in THEM.....

Peace. x

Re: Standards at FE and HE

The pressure to ensure achieviement and grades which will lead to progression is enormous within the FE sector. However, it is up to those, including me, who work in the education sector to demonstrate that NLP will ensure that students learn more easily and fully and as a spin off achievement and grades will improve. There are colleges and universities out there who are commited to NLP. I myself work in a University which sees the value of this in supporting learning and I will be running a practitioner course in January at the University for those working in FE and HE. Kate Benson has done phenomenal work in terms of NLP in Education and is working with FE colleges and schools to train their staff. You might want to look at the work she is doing.

I only started teaching in FE last year and I have convinced the college to run an NLP Practitioner Course it took a lot of convincing and they really resisted and were shocked when I told them that if students did not show the right level of competence I would fail them.

I don't know how true this is but some of the awarding bodies have within their terms that all students should be given every opportunity to pass... This is third hand information so I do not know how true this is.
