In my travels to the thrifty stores across Australia i.e. salvos, lifeline, st vinnies, etc I have purchased & compiled a rather inexpensive book library, and approx 20% that I've never read..
however, after yesterdays night shift of re-reading 'whispering in the wind' I lay down on my bed, and began to read one book I've probably have had for 4 months & previously only read it for approx 30 minutes...
'Teaching as a subversive activity' by N. Postman, specifically the 'languaging' chapter...
The first edition of this book was printed in 1969, in this chapter the authors mention Korzybski & his 'the thing isn't the word used to describe it' paradigm...
As I've been reading 'whispering' I've wondered how much of the 1970s authors, thinkers & influencial people of that time I might ever read..I'm glad to say I've found this book to be something of worth and is definitely included in this neuro-linguistic programmers 'reading guide' as the authors are both accomplished professors of linguistics...
I'm glad the thrift stores across Australia can do logical inclusion sets and usually have a shelf area for self help, health, psychology, etc and they sell some books for $1-4
On the topic of 1970s books related to NLP, I picked up Miller & Galanter's 'Plan's & The Structure of Behaviour' almost 12 months ago...however I only read through the 1st chapter...interesting stuff about how do we know what to do each day & how the behaviourists (Skinner et al) cannot explain this through their 'theories'...as I moved from Melbourne (south) to Cairns (far north) I returned the favour to the salvos by returning many of the books I'd purchased there...I'm constantly surprised at these books finds! I LOVE IT!
Happy reading,
Rob G
