There is a well known saying that adds weight to that proposal.

I can't think what it is though

The opposite seems to be true also e.g. a light hearted topic or make light of a situation.

Exactly, a metaphor causes filtering of experience through a different pattern if they "buy" the metaphor. I often reduce the intensity of an argument by inserting metaphors from dance, such as stepping on each others toes etc. Very different effect than filtering through the usual war like metaphors.

After reading this I need a lift cos i'm feeling a little bogged down with all the pressure that's being exerted onto me...

"We are nihilists.. we believe in nothing.."

"We are nihilists.. we believe in nothing.."

"We are nihilists.. we believe in nothing.." in a german accent

That's better I feel like i've got a spring in my step...

Are you a fan of the cohen brothers too? I love their take on reality and the big lebowski is just fab!

    Aah! Under pressure!

I think we could be about to pave the way for a whole new series of techniques here.

If you're under pressure, could simply changing this SM to light pressure reduce stress?

Yes metaphor is very powerful but I would do something slightly different here. One of the powerful things about the mind is the ability to operate contrary to objective reality. So here's an example with pressure.

I was having difficulty and felt under pressure one day and when I examined the feelings it felt like my brain was squashed inside my head too tightly. Like there wasn't enough room which gave rise to a feeling of pressure. I tried a number of the most obvious things including reducing the "pressure" like you suggest but it always seemed to come back shortly after. Then I realised that physical reality doesn't have to apply because the mind is not physical reality and so it wasn't actually necessary for my brain to fit inside my head at all. So I had it gently expand and be a bit larger than my physical head. Then all the pressure vanished and didn't come back because it didn't actually need the room anymore! It was my believing in that moment that the mind equates to the brain that was preventing me adjust things without resistance. I had trapped myself into feeling pressure. Reducing the pressure the expected way made it fight back because I was working in the wrong place. Sometimes these things make no sense objectively, you just have to play around! Resistance is futile! There is always a centre from which there is no conflict in your preceptions. There is no resistance there. It can just take a while to find. Its a bit like the quiet place in the whirlwind. I would suspect that this is why submodality shifts sometimes work well and sometimes not. Where is the submodality for brain size relative to head size in the standard list? The standard list is useful but doesn't cover all options.

A side note to the last bit about pressure.. I just had a flash and realised why what I did that day worked..

When I had a lot of stuff on my mind I was conceiving of the mind as a surface you put ideas on. By increasing the surface area there was more room. By increasing the size of the brain I was creating more surface area and so the result was less clutter and pressure. Like getting a bigger desk!
