    Hi Sam

With Derren, what you see is rarely what you it appears to be. This is because he and his creative team are experts in the manipulation of perception.

And I wonder what 'pure' NLP is?

I personally believe him when he says that no actors are being used in his clips and that people's reactions are not scripted. However, I do also think that what you see him do is seldom ALL that he does in order to influence the person(s).

For example, in an episode of "tricks of the mind" (?) he makes a woman freeze while walking through a room. He uses embedded words like "you walk through town, doing your christmas STOPPING, you feel it is too much, you are getting into this kind of TRANCE doing all this christmas STOPPING, and you just... want... to.... put the breaks on". It is an interesting clip. However, then he has the woman stop a woman on the street by simply squeeing her hand in the same way Derren did. I don't think the woman in the street was an actress. But obviously there had to be something else to this clip that we don't know of. Maybe there was something planted in the street that made her go "hmmm... did I forget something?" and Derren in some way influenced the woman in the house to squeeze her hand and say "stop" at the right time. I don't really know, but I think his stuff is legit and not scripted, but we don't see the whole picture.

    Re: HI

I love Derren Brown's shows. Great entertainment.

The Simon Pegg one obviously utilises tools we recognise in NLP - anchoring, hypnotic language, etc.

Part of the illusion is what we don't see. For stunts like the woman freezing and the people falling asleep in telephone booths, assuming they're genuine, maybe they have to film a dozen ones that don't work to get one that does. And obviously, those ones get filtered out.

The reason I say 'assuming their genuine' is that I don't rule out the possibility that in some cases, the 'hypnotic trick' is simply go up to someone and say, "I'll give you fifty quid if you pretend to fall asleep in that phone booth." Hey, it's still a kind of hypnosis!

The great thing about television is that there is even more control of what's inside and what's outside your perception.

    Cheers

    Hi Steve

To offer 'fifty quid if you pretend to fall asleep in that phone booth', is what is known in the trade as 'stooging' - and Derren emphatically states that he doesn't do that. Personally I believe him, because...

    1. If he did use stooges, someone would have grassed him to a tabloid by now.
    2. There is no need to stooge anyone in order to create the kind of effects that he and his team create.

That is not to say that 'what you see is necessarily what you get', just that he isn't using stooges.

    All the very best

    Re: HI

Not being a native English speaker I did not know what the word "stooge" meant, thanks for clearing that up.

As for the technical terms that are being tossed around here I only recognize a handful, but that will hopefully change if I can manage to get a spot in an NLP practicioner course that should be held in a week or so not far from here.............
