Why Does My Mind Do the Unwanted?

This is a pretty silly problem I'm dealing with, but its constant and I cant remember a time when my mind hasnt been this stubborn.

Often times when I am trying to focus on the positive, my mind focuses on the negative, maybe I'm trying too hard and the mind is sabotaging me?

For example, if I am focusing on swishing a good memory with a negative 1, sometimes it will swish the wrong way and I DONT WANT this to happen but it still does it anyways. I know that I have been diagnosed with 'OCD' by a psych in the past.

It's pretty much with a lot of deep psychological issues which I'm exercising with NLP or even EFT, subconsciously I believe I fear failing in achieving success and somehow I keep defeating myself mentally; and the opposite effect of what I'm seeking to accomplish occurs instead.

Does this make sense? I'm having a hard time explaining this but that pretty much sums it up, now my focus is trying to find a way for my mind to listen to me rather than to resist and sabotage.

How can I overcome this issue?

Thanks in advance for any advice/guidance

    Hi Rahul

Its great to see that you have already made some progress and highlighted some areas of concern to you, your mind being stubborn could also be a blessing in disguise as stubbornness can also be used to keep moving towards what you desire.

How do you know this is true? Perhaps, it is only that you are yet to discover how your mind really works and how to control it.

What NLP training have you had, if any?

Do you know much about sub modalities?

Perhaps focusing on WHAT YOU WANT TO HAPPEN instead of what you don’t want to happen might be useful in this situation.

If you were in a perfect world and knew you could not fail to achieve the changes you want to make, what would that then be like?

What would need to change for you now that would allow you to know that you have achieved this?

What you focus on is often what you will achieve. One thing that will definitely help you is to find out what you want to achieve and then focus your attention on what you want. Questioning your beliefs and becoming aware of what you are saying to yourself then redirecting your mind towards your goals is very helpful to achieve this.

For example you wrote "subconsciously I believe I fear failing in achieving success and somehow I keep defeating myself mentally; and the opposite effect of what I'm seeking to accomplish occurs instead"

After reading the above statements, I wonder, How do you know this is true, or is it an example that are you learning more about yourself?

I have discovered that by changing how a person looks at things and begins to understand The Presuppositions of NLP that they will begin to appreciate that what they did....was the best they could do at that particular time.... they can then begin to do things differently and bring about the changes they desire. Are you familiar with these presuppositions?

One of my favourites is that "There is no failure only feedback" to me this means that anything a person does is actually an opportunity for them to learn what works and does not work, for them.

As far as something you can do to help yourself is to become aware of when you start the negative self talk and to stop it from becoming your main point of focus.

Then perhaps as you become aware of it and catch yourself doing it, find out what this does for you.

Is this going to help me to achieve my goals?
What can I learn about myself from this situation?
How can I apply what I have learnt to keep moving towards achieving my goals?
How will I know when I have done this?

Rahul, How will you know when you have done this?

Yes it does make sense and you have done a great job of explaining yourself. Perhaps you could use your focus to your advantage, as it has a positive intent, is perhaps protecting you from something you perceived once as an issue.

In my experience, as you begin to shift your focus and have fun discovering new ways to learn from your old behaviours and actions that you begin to do things differently and inline with your positive intent. After all, you have the same end goal in common and ultimately that is to do what is best for Rahul.

Sometimes all it takes is to chunk up and discover what the common goal is for you in this situation.

Since you are in fact, one complete system working towards a common goal, perhaps you just need to discover what that common goal is. Now, does that make sense for you?

What is it that you want to achieve?

Let me know how you go answering the questions, and if this has allowed you to overcome this issue?

    Have a great day

Re: Why Does My Mind Do the Unwanted?

    Hi Rahul

Perhaps some of your negative images are actually positive.

There may be some of those awful feelings that come together with horrid images that actually do you good.

Sometimes I get a really bad feeling when I walk along the pavement. I worry about all sorts of things and feel that people are out to get me. And what happens? When I see the green man in front of me on the pedestrial crossing, I don't trust it.

I look both ways before crossing. Many others don't.

    Am I a paranoid freak?

Look at the stats and realize that a huge amount of people get horribly caught out on such crossings.

Lesson? Well, perhaps you have a talent that can be utilized.

Look at how you can use your negative feelings. Channel them away from stuff that irritates you. Move them to help you deal with things that are important. Such as your cholesterol, your fitness, your sugar levels etc. Make them part of your homeostasis.

But also allow other parts of yourself free. When there is bad stuff, commit it to action, or commit it to paper, or tell someone you really trust about it. Then get on with other stuff.

    Don't worry about images.

Think about making images and feelings work for you.

    Cheers
    Rich
