Hi… I found pretty interesting the approach of Charles T. Tart in his book "States of Consciousness" (first published 1975) regarding disruption of the stabilization of a "normal" state of consciousness (d-SoC) by hypnotic means, so the construction / state of consciousness comes apart, and then a transitional period occurs, where patterning stimuli / forces can be applied to build a new construction / state of consciousness, an altered state of consciousness (d-ASC).
According to Tart, a d-SoC could be not appropriate / useful anymore "for the existing environmental situation", or because "the environment is safe and stable and no particular d-SoC is needed to cope with it". Then, the (re)patterning process can be used to transit to a better d-SoC or response.
