Totally New to the Whole Concept

Hello everyone. Over the last two weeks all I have heard, almost hourly (not quite) is NLP NLP NLP! So I thought that I'd have a look and see if this is meant to be. Have I been NLP'd do you think? It is so prominant around me that whenever I meet new people now I am not surprised if it's mentioned. What guidance can you give me as to how to possibly move forward with NLP and why would I want to? Your thoughts would be very much valued.

    Gee, George.

I don't know...what seems to be pulling you in the direction of NLP ... in your own mind, that is?

    Hi Gerard

After you reply to Venus, I'd be intrigued to know where you're hearing about NLP, just out of curiosity. You've come to a great place!

Thank you everyone, other views could also assist me. I have heard with people at work. There is an NLP master who says that he finds it useful for his objectives. I am wary of the manner it can be used and suspect that I might be affected by something I don't understand...then one other guy said that he was on an NLP course...then someone else mentioned it etc etc etc then today at lunchtime, a complete stranger asked me if I'd heard of NLP!!!!!!!!!!!!1 That's why I joined the forum. Any ideas?

    Hi Gerard

First of all, if so many other people are learning nlp then you could be at a great disadvantage because you are already wary of the manner it can be used and because it might affect you in ways you don't understand.

Some people concider nlp as a way to model the excellence of other people and to be able to produce similar results of the excellent behaviour of other people in their field. It is also useful to learn these models that have been created over many years (mainly late 70's / early 80's) of modeling many excellent people and using effective patterns of communication in your own behaviour as you move forward.

You could read books and other training materials or buy a personally coached course from someone who could help you chart a path and teach you through the many media options available and it deepends what you really want to learn but I would strongly suggest live training at some point.

If you are looking to expand your horizons then you can learn many of the skills of legendary players and learn from what works really well with a proven track record. If you were already a trainer or coach, as your profile suggests, nlp can also be about training and coaching which means some very useful knowledge for you to work with.

There are many sources to learn nlp from so very imporantly you can learn at your own pace as you need to best fullfil your objectives and you will have more to say as you meet new people.

That seems like a good enough reason to get started to me.

It will also provide a framework to assess what you may be about to learn.

You can do a number of things here.
1 Ask questions, the more specific the better I think
    2 Read Posts
3 Find out about possible training events
4 Practice some of the techniques you read about
5 Use it a source to go find out more.
    ...
    ...
    ...

It's now up to you. Off you go.

Let us know how you get on, Gerard. We hope to see lots more of you around here as you read posts and ask questions. And get opinions - we've no shortage of those.
