    Hi Guys,

My name is Masood Khan. I have only been reading nlp stuff and using those techniques on myself. Its been great so far. Haven't had a chance to work with a practitioner as yet. My only mentor has been the books I have read.

My first forum. I hope to have some help from you guys to promote my skills as a motivational and public speaker . Have some tips?

Hi Masood, you have come to the right place. I too studied NLP and hypnosis for a couple of years before taking my training. I certainly benefited from the books, audio books and DVD's. The training itself was amazing and I highly recomend you attend when you can.

What have been the most influential books you have read?

    Cheers
    Tim

    Re: Self Taught NLP'r

If you can't get to some physical training which is the best then video will be the next best then audio. A lot of stuff only works if the non-verbal communication (body and tone) and situational arrangements (context) are right. That is hard to get from books until you have a feel for the physical side. Then its pretty easy to make stuff from books work because then you can guess how to fill in the blanks!

    John,

That's really good advice. I've read a TON of books now (OK, maybe really just a few pounds), but that might be what's missing. Good point!

    Cheers,

    Phil

    Re: Self Taught NLP'r

    Hi All,

I'm similar to Masood i.e just books so far. I am was thinking of going on a Prac course, but £1000 + is a lot of money especially when you are doing it off your own back.

So far I have read Rodger Ellerton "Live Your Dreams, Let Reality Catch Up" & "Teach Yourself Nlp (I find this very dry!!)".

I've just ordered "NLP Workbook" - what DVDs do you think I should get? Or is it REALLY worth going on a course?

I d/l bits of Mr Bandler's stuff (REALLY great), but want to know where to go next.

    Cheers,

    Jon.

A good hypnosis course will also give you a physical grounding of basic principles. My first training experience was 16 years ago was with the Erickson foundation with Michael Yapko, Jeffrey Zeig, Brent Geary etc. I came across NLP and devoured books a bit later but I think I would have missed the point a lot if I hadn't had some actual hypnotic practice whether that was through NLP or Hypnosis training. Stuff like the NLP 6 step reframe just makes absolute sense immediately after doing say hypnosis with ideo-dynamics (arm levitation/finger signalling etc).

Unfortunately part of NLP culture seems to be charging a huge amount for quite short courses although I have seen noteworthy exceptions.

I can't say which NLP courses are good value for money currently apart from maybe the big names like Bandler who will be charging a lot. There must be some skilled ones who offer value on a lower budget. Others here can advise better on NLP value. My background is more Ericksonian.

Choosing good trainers is a task and a half. There are the good, the bad and the ugly everywhere in both Hypnosis and NLP. It was simply a matter of luck that my first course happened to be one of the best. I had just heard of Erickson so tracked down related people who happened to be in the UK at the time. Total luck. I have done a few courses over the years and some were really disappointing. Others were astounding.

On a budget, and in terms of hypnosis, there is one audio course that I was initially a little suspicious of (because it was marketed using the typical internet marketing hype landing page thing by someone else) but I was actually really surprised by the depth of the content for the price tag. In terms of conversational and hypnotic techniques and basic grounding such as understanding importance of setting frames etc I have never heard anything that was value for money for such a low price. Its many many hours worth of well organised and gradually more dense material. Its called "conversational hypnosis" by Igor Ledochowski.

Audio is fine for learning the vocal delivery and language aspect of things but won't help you with stuff like anchoring which is best seen and even better experienced.
