Hey Nigel-
when i finally enslave the world with my hypnotic powers you can take over every other wednesday.
'your eyelids feel heavy...perhaps... like two large jumbo jets perched over your eyes...trance or suffer... that's right... like drowning in warm treacle'
Part of my patented 10 hour induction.
I like the paintings at crackedvisions- very cool- sort of Dali meets Clive Barker over a cup of magic mushrooms. -
Re: Hello Y'All- Calibrate This!!! Alexei, what's the best stuff you've learned from Plato? -
Luckily Plato was a good writer, unlike most philosophers, and most of his theories are fascinating if not correct.
I like his ’theory of ideas,’ the view that the world is spilt up into objects and ideas- for example we all know what a horse is even though there are different breeds and they all look slightly different, so we have the idea of ’horse-ness’ and the object ’a horse.’ It’s kinda like a consciousness/ reality - unconsciousness / possibility split. Or it is in my warped view.
Then there was Socrates habit of relentlessly questioning his disciples worldview until they became enlightened nervous wrecks (an ancient meta-monster.)
He believed that you couldn’t truly understand something unless you could define it and if someone said they desired happiness or wisdom he would ask ’what is happiness?’
It’s called Socratic definition and is kind of like a well formed outcome (oh, I’m pushing it now) ‘How can you reach happiness if you don’t know what it means to you?’
I read more modern stuff like Sartre and Nietzsche but if you read Socrates, Plato and Aristotle you get to see the evolution of modern western thought. ‘The Phaedo’ is the story of Socrates Trail and death and a lot of key themes and ideas later resurfaced in Christianity. Still, enough boring twaddle for one day- I’ve got conspiracy theories to design. -

Re: Hello Y'All- Calibrate This!!! Cool reply Alexei, let us know anything else you've learned form philophosers. -
Ta very much everyone
Isn’t it weird to actually think about things and find out how much weird stuff has crept into your head over the years? Humm…some would call it learning, I call it distracting.
Most of my favourite bits of philosophy are things that have an eastern tinge to them or the things that are so way out they jar your model of reality more then a thimble of cheap cider.
Heidegger(interesting mind but alas- a Nazi) asked the question ‘what is being?’ I can look at my coffee mug and call it a mug but that’s a word, a label- I could call it clay fired into pottery and then painted misty blue- but still that’s not what it is. I can look at my hand but still I get confused into labels and processes without reaching anything close to its actual being. It’s easy to go round in loops but it wastes an hour nicely.
It reminds me of this three day fast/ meditation I did in Ireland yonks ago- I was meditating for hours when I had this strange visualisation that still remains one of the most powerful experiences of my life. (Although in print it will be more Barbara Cartland then Castaneda)
I was watching my body floating in space when my skin started peeling off- followed by my bones starting to disintegrate- then finally all my gorgeous intestines flying away- as I saw my body unravelling I started to get scared and felt like I was dying but then when the last fragment of my brain and memories sailed into the horizon I was struck by the thought ‘when everything that I am is gone…what is left?’ I stared into the stars and realised ‘when everything that is me is gone, the only thing left is the universe. Everything that ever has been or will be.’
It seems quite common sense but at the time I’d never experienced anything like it. I highly recommend Tai chi, Reiki and meditation to one and all. Just take the philosophy in small doses.
Here’s a nice few nice quotes from the late, great Epicurus  ‘God should not concern us-
Death is not to be feared. What is good is easy to obtain-
What is bad is easily avoided."
‘It is impossible to live a pleasant life without living wisely and well and justly. And it is impossible to live wisely and well and justly without living a pleasant life.’ -
