Hello from a Newbie Needing Guidance.

    Hello Everybody,

I hope you are all well.

I wanted to say hello as I have read posts on this site before and found them interesting.

Maybe it would be beneficial to explain who I am and part of my reason for being here...and what I potentially need help with.

I am 28 years old and have been a salesman most of my working life. I have moved into more of a Operational Management position over the past 18 months. My initial interest in NLP comes from 2 sources. Firstly, as a salesman I was (unknowingly) trained in NLP related sales tools and secondly, 2 years ago, I went through a minor rough patch and was driven to Paul McKenna's book "Change your life in 7 Days". I found it incredible.

So, over the past year I have delved deeper into self-development and have read most of Michael Neill's books (all excellent) and am currently reading "I can make you Rich" by Paul McKenna. I have also bought Persuasion Skills Black Book by Rintu Basu which I found excellent. In addition to that, I have recently purchased Steve Andreas NLP: The Technology of Achievement and Robert Dilts, Slight of Mouth. Oh and Richard Bandlers most recent book. To top it all off, I attended a Change Your Life in 3 days course at the beginning of May.

I am interested in what other people would recommend I study in the future.

The crux of the dilemma that I have though is this: I have a scientists brain and NLP and Science do not mix. I understand there is the NLP R&R study being conducted which I am eagerly awaiting news on. I was wondering what people could direct me too, to reinforce the efficacy of NLP?

Equally importantly, what other books do people feel have changed them and would recommend that I read?

As you may have gathered, as a salesman, the Art of Persuasion is of considerable interest to me. What books in this part of NLP would people recommend that I read?

Many thanks for all your future help.

    Jamie

    Jamie,

I would read Magic in Practice by Garner Thomson & Khalid Khan this is a book written by Drs (MDs) for other Drs about how to use NLP in their practices.

I think that a Dr would fall under the wider label of scientist, would they not?

I would also read How to solve it by George Polya this fits in nicely with NLP Meta model, Sleight of Mouth by assisting you do develop the mind set of looking at presenting problems in a different way.

    Cheers,

    Jason

    Jason,

Thank you very much. I do have Sleight of Mouth but have yet to tuck into it. It does look very good and I have read some excellent reviews.

Thanks you for all your help.

Re: Hello from a Newbie Needing Guidance.

"Guerilla Marketing" by Jay Conrad Levinson - No sure if you'll find it useful in a sales environment, it's aimed at marketing more, but a good read and it's got some interesting points u might find useful..and lots of hidden NLP techniques in there too! You could also give "The definitive book of body language" by Allan Pease a read, very useful for sales and life in general!
    Good luck!

Get a copy of Persuasion Engineering by Bandler and La Valle. Read it twice and read it like a novel.
Check out the archives for lots of discussion of it.

I did science A levels (Double Maths, Physics and Chemistry) and I have two degrees in electronics and computing. So I guess by your definition I have a scientist's brain, or possibly an engineer's. I have also run my own company for over 20 years so I also have a business brain.

I find that NLP fits in fine with my brain because I don't need to make it fit with the other parts.

    This is why

If I read a great poem, hear an incredible piece of music, see a great play or experience any other form of great art, from an Installation to a picture I am changed.

My map of the world is slightly modified. I experience the world differently after that. I don't need to analyse why or carry out double blind studies, Art changes me.

I think of NLP as concentrated Art. It is a direct way to change my map of the world.

It can mix easily with my scientist/engineer/business/human brain since I don't feel a need to take it apart and see how it works.

If I were using it in life support systems then I would need to dig deeper but since I can use it to change how I experience the world, communicate with people (including customers) and how other people experience their lives I am happy to just treat it as concentrated art.

Re: Hello from a Newbie Needing Guidance.

    Hi Jamie,

You are on the right track with Sleight of Mouth.
Derren Brown uses slight of mouth all the time...check out the simon pegg you tube video as an example.

The non scientific tag that NLP gets used to trouble me. However, now I agree with Nick: "think of NLP as concentrated Art".

I like to see NLP as a kind of horse whispering for humans.

Most importantly, what matters is what works.

For me, the efficacy of NLP is reinforced when you hear the personal narratives of the peoples lives it has transformed.

He or she will be missing it, won't they?

Seriously some great suggestions here, especially 'Persuasion Engineering'. Go for it Ben!
