    I have a follow up question after reading Matthew's question and the answers. For a metaphor to work, do we have to believe it's true or doesn't it matter?

    For a metaphor to work you have to learn something.
    Whether or not it is true is not relevant for the learnings.

    Metaphors are usually based on some truth.

    I believe we would have to find it true, whether or not we considered it to be factual.
