| | | | | Alphabet Edit Hi,
I first came across the alphabet edit a while ago as a way of diffusing or getting out of a negative state.
I've recently heard that it can be leveraged in more powerful ways although I can't find the overall procedure described in detail anywhere.
Has anyone got any experience of using it with submodalities or spatial anchoring?

Posts: 992 | | | Here you go- the site has changed the formatting- which was designed to chuck some parts of the article in specific ways- yet the process is in tact which is what matters- The Alpha-power-bet inoculation Created and designed By Jay Budzynski © 2000/2008 “Warning” NLP/Hypnotic communication and the structure of grammar, does not necessarily share the same structure you have been told. It was about 6 years ago, when I was looking at using some of the preformatted NLP patterns, to help me make reading more enjoyable, also at that time I was reading a number of NLP books one of them by the very brilliant Robert Dilts, the particular book this reference is relating too, is and was, Slight of Month, or conversational reframing. There was a part in the book where Robert was talking about, the idea of thought viruses, and how they can hijack and sabotage people, and how they can function well in the world. There was something, in what I read, that got me, a flash of insight maybe, yet my thoughts got caught up, in the whole notion of “Thought virus” so I asked my self, if I was a virus, how would I work? And allowed this thought to spin, in my brain for a little time, and came up with a number of funny and some not so funny answers, “you Don’t Get inside that easy” so after a number of thought, computations, I then asked My self, what would I need to do to out perform this virus and be able to re-pattern it?
So it would not be able to function any longer in a negative way, and by the process of this re-patterning would empower, and create a very powerful, self organizational platform for self actualization. So I was having a beer, and was running through, a host of NLP patterns, to see if my brain, could come up with something, after running the 250 plus, that I Knew, at that time, which did not give me anything, that would give me the flexibility, that I was looking for, so getting a little pi**ed off, and my brain was hurting, I went into the kitchen, and kicked over a book on memory training, “Use your head By Tony Buzan” and my insight fired up, a few days before, I was playing memorizing the Alphabet. So I sat down, with the memory book, and the slight of mouth Book, and not feeling in a particularly good learning state, closed my eyes, and started to think about a few good times, from my life, that made me feel good, I ran through a few memories, and something clicked, Memory associations, Good Feeling=Emotional bonding, Alphabet = built in filing and anchoring system. So I sat with a pen and a pad, and wrote out the Alphabet, and started thinking about Times in my life where I have felt, good, or done something well or had a really good laugh, and using each letter of the alphabet as a catalyst to create a positive life empowering state. I will fill the blanks with one of my auxiliary list, yet it works so much better if you take the time and really build your own. So what you do is, think of a time and a place where you had a real good time, it can be from anywhere in life, school, work, collage, sports, a film, a poem, a book, a time where you overheard a conversation, that many you smile or feel good, it can be a look from some one you know cares for you, and for the letters that don’t seem to create a instant association, then find an empowering word, that when you say it or read it, makes you feel empowered by association, so for Z= Zeal or zippy , zippy is from a child hood TV show, called rainbow, and zippy always made me laugh, and it’s that type of association that your looking for, zeal ready for anything. A= Assertive B= Bold C= Creative D= Delighted E= Exhilarated F= Focused G= Gratitude H= Honest I= Intuitive J= Jolly K= Keen L= Loyal M= Magical N= Nice O= Organized P= Purposeful Q= Quiet R= Resilient S= Strong T= Tenacious U= United V=Validated
W=Willingness
X= eXcited Y= Youthful Z= Zeal So once you have built your list, now you have to take, the time, to create an anchor, using all your senses, and build an association for each letter of the alphabet, and in so doing chain each letter to a power state, using the same anchor throughout the whole anchoring process, and it goes like this, think of the letter “A” and get into that state, feel what felt, hear what you heard, and see what you saw, get in to that start as best as you can, then pressing your finger and thumb together, and repeat this until you can think of the letter A, and get in to that state. And then you do the same process if each of the other letters. This can take from a few hours to a few days, depending on how much time you take doing it, and I would suggest doing it in blocks of seven minutes. Once you have done that, then this is where the magic happens, think of a number of random words, just little words. Cat, Dog, Frog, Window and Cup Now translate cat in to the power-bet list. Creative assertive tenacious, now step into that combination of states. Now that is a nice place to be. Now do the same with Dog, Frog and Window, and cup. It’s good in it? Now think about some offensives words, that have had an emotional impact bad language/ four letter words, and go and translate, each word in to the power-bet strategy letter by letter, it takes the bite right out of those words. Now think about any real life event, where you were put in to an unpleasant situation, and take any word or phrase, that you were offended by, and that had an emotional impact, and translate, every word of the offending phrase into the power-bet and take them resources back in to that time and place. Now once you have done that with a mindful-awareness, with as many real life events, your brain will start to do it all by it’s self, do this with your own negative scripts and in a short time, the voice in your head will become an empowering one. The application to this pattern is vast; it’s a good idea, to create several Power-bet lists, and to up date your associations, from time to time. Think about a host of future events that might normally create a little, bit of a crises, an interview for a job, a meeting with a client, taking a tests, or anything that comes to mind, pick the most emotive, words or phrases, that captivate the whole representation of what you are issuing about, and translate it into, a power-bet encoding inoculation process. This can also be use to create an empowering step by step, learning strategy, when you’re working with others, if some one was to say, “I can’t lose weight” if you tap in to your own power-bet, you can anchor each of those states, and map them across, and you will find changing becomes really easy. With a warm heart Jay Budzynski

| | | | | Re: Alphabet Edit Ahh yes, now I recall having seen this when you posted it.
It's an excellent technique.
Actually the alphabet edit i had in mind was this: The Alphabet Edit is a physical pattern of movements that synchronizes left and right hemispheres of the brain through cross lateral movements, while overloading the processing capabilities of the conscious mind. You're probably aware of your ability to process 7 plus or minus 2 items of information at the same time. The theory behind the Alphabet Edit is that it consumes all of your conscious processing facilities while linking the left and right brain hemispheres, thus enabling your unconscious mind to get on with solving the issue. You will need to make a copy of the accompanying “Alphabet Chart” (at the bottom of this page), in order to carry out the process. Whatever you're seeking to achieve, whether it is stress relief, the solution to a problem, a particular outcome, or a clarification of confused thoughts, first you need to make an internal representation of the issue; possibly a mental picture, a feeling or a sound which symbolizes it for you. Now run the Alphabet Edit, preferably with a friend or colleague as a coach. You should speak aloud the large letters on the chart, at the same time perform the following actions: When the letter under the large letter is an R lift to your Right arm. When the letter under the large letter is an L lift your Left arm. When the letter under the large letter is a T raise both arms Together. Remember to say out loud the letters of the alphabet whilst making the corresponding movements. Proceed through the alphabet in this fashion but if you make a mistake return to the beginning of the chart. When you reach T go backwards through the alphabet to A. That completes phase one.
Phase two is more of a challenge. This time when you raise the right-arm you will also raise the left leg, at the same time and when you raise the left arm you also raise the right leg. When you raise both arms together then you stand on tiptoe and again you go through the alphabet from A to T and back again. If you find these variations to easy, you can progress to more complicated options: for example instead of going across the chart go up and down or diagonally. Remember the whole point is that it should be hard to do you. You can go through this process are as many times as it takes to produce a shift to in the image that symbolized the issue or the feeling has become more comfortable. Alphabet chart Please make a chart like this
on a piece of A4 paper A B C D E
R T L T L F G H I J T L R T R
K L M N O
R T L L T P Q R S T R R T T L

I absolutely love your creative alphabet anchor list technique. What a powerful tool for people who choose to use it!
Richard, in what situations have you used the alphabet edit, or recommended its use to others?
with gratitude,

| | | | | Re: Alphabet Edit Hi Phil,
I've heard two ideas:
if you enter a state and identify the submodalities then do the alphabet edit you will find the submodalities have changed. as if overloading the conscious mind allows the unconscious to work on the underlying issue and change the submodalities.
also: if you spatially anchor a state in a circle , step out then do the alphabet edit then go back to the circle and relive the event the way that you would like it to be then the behaviour will change.
I have no doubt that overloading the conscious mind allows the unconscious to work on things (I suspect you could easily put someone in a deep trance while they are doing the alphabet edit) but the processes could maybe do with a little more detail. | | | | Message posted: 12th Nov 08, 10:57 pm

Posts: 333 | | | Hi Richard/Phil I learnt the Alphabet Game during Prac course and it is a New Code exercise. We used it to elicit and then anchor a high performance state. The type athletes call "In the Zone". After doing the activity for a while when you get into a fully up time state - your focus and senses are involved in doing the the task and all the letters appear bigger - your mind is focused on the activity and not distracted by peripheral activities and sounds around etc It was interesting to note that after I had completed the exercise, I became aware of other situations in my life when I was in the high performance state. Like when rock climbing, jogging, even during work, when I was totally involved in the task I was doing. The funny part is, that as soon as I noticed the internal dialogue started “wow I am in the high performance state” I popped out of it because I was no longer fully up time. A great state to anchor and use when you need to be fully focused on what you are doing. Have a great day Frederic

Posts: 333 | | | Re: Alphabet Edit Hi Phil Try using the alphabet chart written on A1 size paper and do it in 5 rows of 5 and do not repeat more than 2 L -R -T on any row. Place the chart up at eye level on a wall and pick a spot about 6 -7 feet from the chart, this is your in the zone spot (anchor point). As soon as you make a mistake , STOP. Immediately move off the zone spot and shake it off. Then start again. Keep doing this till you go throught he whole chart as you get to Y keep doing the alphabet chart by continuing on with A. It is good if you can have someone spot you. They can then immediately stop and move you as you make a mistake. A B C D E L R R T L F G H I J R L T T R K L M N O R L T L T P Q R S T L R L T R U V W X Y R L T R L I have three charts with different variations of the pattern and swap them about so I do not become too used to any one chart.
Enjoy the process. I dont think I have forgotten anything though I am sure someone will point it out if I have.
Have a great day
Frederic

Posts: 34 | | | Re: Alphabet Edit Interesting post guys. This game is just one of many New Code Games designed for use within the New Code Change Format, although as you have already discovered it can have many other uses. The Alphabet Game was developed by John Grinder & Arthur Tabb. I have used this game many times and have mentioned my experiences in another post which I have posted here along with the design variables of the New Code Games so you can start creating your own! New Code Game Criteria Scalability
Using multiple Rep Systems
Using both hemispheres
Parallel Processing
Peripheral and foveal focus
Creating a rhythm and confusion through overload One of my experiences from another post "Thanks for your input. The New Code position is that instead of using past experiences like "going back to a time when" we create resourceful states through games or exercises. We then anchor this resource state to the 'problem' context and hey presto change happens.
Interestingly I have found that I have different results if I do NOT pre-frame the work. For example in most classic code interventions one would ask their client what resource they think they need in this context, the client would then think of what would be useful. When I have used the New Code change format - NOT putting any language or labels on the resources before hand has far better results. One lady I worked with after the intervention explained that she had resources in that context she would never had guessed she needed. So through eliminating the conscious minds part in the process the unconscious mind identified these resources and brought them over - genius! Again a lot of these techniques are covered in John Grinders books." Oh and finally I would like to go back on something Frederic said. If you can find a coach to calibrate and assist you with the games that will help! I have studied the New Code NLP with John Grinder myself and would be happy to answer any questions on it as best I can – shoot! If any of you are interested in learning New Code first hand we are running a New Code course here at the Academy in 2009. Here is a link for more info: New Code NLP Hope this is interesting guys! Thanks for the response! I plan on using this pattern over and over, and I have a friend who teaches middle school (ages 12-14) who does a lot of brain gym things with her students, and plans on using the alphabet edit as well!

Good stuff! New Code is great with kids especialy if you anchor the result to learning!
I did a practice session here at the Academy last year for the first time. I had a few nerves before hand but after a quick New Code game I was flying. It can be quite amazing how versitile these techniques are.
I would recomend the book Whispering in the Wind; John Grinder and Carmen Bostic St Clair for some nice New Code stuff.

I only wish that I could buy Whispering in the Wind. Evidently it is not available, and there is ONE copy for sale on Amazon at a price over $250! A little steep for my wallet these days. Perhaps I will try to interlibrary loan it!
