Announcement: NLP Connections Will Be Offline for a Few Hours Later

I'll be upgrading the server later today, so there will be a few hours after lunch when the site won't be available.

Things should run faster when it comes back. We've been getting a lot of extra traffic lately so the server resources have been stretched... the upgrades will speed things up (I hope!).

I change my mind often; I might not agree with this any more

Thank you for all the work you do to keep this great service running.

Does that mean that you did not literally upgrade the server?

    Well said Nick, thanks Chris.

I watched as the anticipated time to have the site back on line crept later and later and thought about how much I hate fixing IT problems and I started to experience some sympathy stress. Although I am sure you are too capable to expereince such an amateur emotion :-)

    Thanks again Chris,

    Matt

Being an IT git, I have fond memories of being up all night in data centres fixing problems and doing upgrades. I even remember getting called out of bed at 2am one Saturday morning to fix some OS/390 assembler code, to get a robotic tape librarian working! This was in the days before mobile phones were common, so if you were on call you got a bleeper, like those doctor bleepers. If you got a bleep it meant one of the shift staff was on their way to your house to pick you up and fetch you into the office! And you'd get told what problem you had to fix while you were in the car!

What days! Not always fun at the time, but fun now. Now that they're over!

(Now my IT work is in the business management of IT - contracts, license management, etc. In a way less fun, but I get to put more of my communication skills in to practice that way.)

So, whatever fun you had Chris, I know!

    Cheers
