Mediocrity Central "ooh That's Nice..."

What words and phrases tend to devalue experiences for you...?

"At the end of the day..."

"In a nutshell..."

...let's celebrate the mind-numbing blandness acheivable with an impoverished English vocabulary...

I claim "Nice" as the main offender, closely followed by "fine"

Is being "Okay", really a desirable outcome for anybody??

Should be "a nice chat..." eh?

"Play nice, now, y'hear?"

"Nice" and "fine" are a bit like "Like"

Like when something is "like", like something but its really not "like" -like anyfing

or a little like

when you put 100% into a task but that is not as good as someone who puts 110% in!

What a charming idea for a post and it should bring up some lovely yet emotionless points of view.

Interestingly Nigel, I wonder how are the insipid words and statements we use, actually a benefit?

Since they do not enhance the meaning we place in a certain context and devalue our life are they actually an indicator for what may actually be a usefull fulcrum? Just a thought.

Have a great day

Frederic

"if you are anything like me.." I wonder who else has noticed this seemingly popular embedded command in daily conversation?

Yet - I love the word yet- Yet I don't know if you do or don't yet as you learn to appreciate this wonderful word- yet I edging my bet you can learn to appreciate it yet it's understandable if you don't yet, yet maybe in time it can grow on you like it did on me yet I am not sure about that yet!

hehehe

Well its like I always say, the thing is at the end of the day, you can’t beat a nice cup of tea. As a matter of fact,(no word of a lie) the other day this bloke turned round to me & he says (& this is like totally random) He literally walks up to me & he says “you can’t beat a nice…

Here's one I hear in Medway a lot...

(after a short preamble that smells reminiscent of a farmyard somehow)

"well, what it is, is..."

(followed by more farmyard olfactory reference, some kind of excuse and/or an attempt to blag something not originally on offer!)

And here's an NLP one that really guarantees negative empathy from me:

"Here's the thing..."

Yeah? Well here's my finger, smartarse!!

very funny thread!

How about "I never did nothing"

or

"I dont like no carrots" -

so, you like carrots then?

"no, I just told you I dont like no carrots"

or when people say

"i'd like to do that but I'd better not"- what a silly statement!

Oh lets not overlook those nice meaning new age/secret slogans

"believe and receive" ... I believe I will get a utilities bill soon, WOW it happened.

"ask and you shall receive"... I asked for a new 4x4, filled out the blank check to the universe, and meditated and prayed five times a day for an opportunity to present itself for the next 30 days, as detailed in the book, I guess the universal dispatch warehouse just got the request wrong because I recieved a speeding fine for a 4x4 , lucky for the Police Department that the postal service is more efficient, .

my personal favourite "you have all the answers". If people had all the answers then why would they need to buy the book and DVD. .

Be positive and keep smiling as I believe there is more cynicism and funny posts to come.

Have a great day

Frederic

Re: Mediocrity Central "ooh That's Nice..."

Oooooh I abreact like crazy to the phrase "At the end of the day..." in my experience it is always used just before a statement that indicates that your values are meaningless to the speaker.

eg "At the end of the day your job is to make money for the company"

"At the end of the day we need to turn a profit"

(okay I have apparantly mostly heard this is a work context!)

"At the end of the day there's nothinganyone can do about it..."

That kind of thing.

I call using words like nice/fine/ok "damning with faint praise" why not just say "mundane" "adequate" "acceptable" "tolerable"...

I have ongoing faint praise insult competitions with one of my friends.

"it was not entirley a waste of my time to have spared you a fraction of my attention today as you were practically amusing, at one point"

"Had it occurred to me that you were trying to be interesting enough to attract my attention I should certainly have removed the temptation"

Ahhhh, Mog good to see you post, I was just thinking, well to be truthful couldn't resist the temptation to reply with, At the end of the day you are the one who chooses to react like crazy. Right now, I am wondering how you will choose to react. .

Hope we get to catch up next time I am in Melbourne.

Have a great day

Frederic

"When my ship comes in...."

I would hear my elders and betters say when I was a wee nipper.

Trouble is, we live in the middle of england, and if, if, if our ship had come in it would have unloaded and gone without us even knowing about it.
