Learning Strategies for NLP Text Books

I'm sitting here looking at a pile of Bandler & Grinder books that I bought with the vague idea of going back to basics and reading through some of the classic texts, taking notes, and basically learning the bits that I missed out / didn't fully grasp the first time around doing the master prac with Bandler and McKenna.
The question is, what strategies do you find effective in studying NLP text books?
Are you a note taker? A “make a list” kind of person? A mind mapper? Etc?
What did you do to simplify, increase, augment your learning of NLP from the text books?
What order would you study NLP in if you had your time over again?
Do you have any creative ways to link between the various topics in different books?
Do you have any good memory retention strategies when it comes to learning NLP models, techniques or theory?
Which parts of NLP did you find “fluff” or perhaps over complicated for your needs?
So far, I have only used my own personal learning strategies to learn NLP, now I'm looking to try out other people's to see how much more I can learn.
Any ideas greatly appreciated.
Cheers

Justin
