Responding to statements...

There are times when I feel confused, perhaps a little manipulated and occasionally believe that what has just been said to me is an invitation to start a round of arguing.

What is said by the other typically takes on the following structure and on the surface is a comment that comes from nowhere:

"It's ok, I'll go you just sit there", when somebody knocks on the door.

or

"I have no cigarettes/milk/bread/cheese/money left"

Now, part of me feels an urge to respond to some implied message I think exists in the statement pattern above, yet I am unclear as to what specifically. I am aware that I could be "mindreading" here by telling myself that this person wants me to respond to their statement by feeling uncomfortable and then rescuing them or feeling responsible for the predicament they find themselves in. Yet I am sure my sense of discomfort is arising from my attempting to make sense of the structure of the language.

Another part of me thinks well screw you and I could ignore what has just been said, or say "that's right, you have no cigarettes/milk/bread/etc left, or even say back to them "you have no milk/bread/money left for what specifically?"

I would be really curious to discuss this with you guys here in order to further my understanding.....
